Getting Started
Most parents have some concerns about their children.  If you find yourself wondering about how your child is hearing, seeing, playing, talking, walking or behaving or if you have a medical concern, here are some things you can do:

  • Talk to your child's doctor.
  • Have your child screened (evaluated) by Minneapolis school staff.  It's free and all children should be screened by age 3 in Minneapolis. Contact 348-TOTS to get started.  It is never too early to have your child screened.  They will screen from birth.  You may have your child screened more than once.
  • Compare your child's development to others' by using the state of Minnesota's developmental wheel.
  • Sign up for the Follow Along Program with the Minnesota Department of Health.
  • Need help finding help for your child and family?  Call 211 or use this "Help Finding Help" State of Minnesota website.
  • Parents know their children best and generally are the most consistent observers of their behavior and development.   First Signs can help parents evaluate their concerns and find resources.
  • For a brief overview of early intervention and how it works, check out this brief Project Exceptional web presentation.
  • To compare your child's social emotional development and for tips to help your child, try this checklist developed by Hennepin County Early Childhood Services, called "Plays Well With Others."
